The House of Commons has 659 members, who are elected to five-year terms by popular vote. This body is the more powerful. The House of Lords has about 1,200 members. It is made up of hereditary peers, 26 archbishops and bishops, about 20 law lords, and life peers of honorary rank. It has little power.
