The Buddhists adopted the Hindu calendar and adapted it to serve their needs. The first calendar grouped days into small units according to the phases of the moon. The days of full moon and new moon were observed with religious rites. The days of quarter moons were days of fasting. The beginning of the calendar marks the death of Gautama Buddha. As Buddhists moved to other countries, they observed the calendars in use there.
