Gnetum
malinjo (Java)
(Family Gnetaceae)
Gnetum is an Asian genus of tropical trees, none of which have an English name. The trees are small and elegant and bear bunches of small, dark red fruits which contain edible seeds, an important food source in parts of Southeast Asia. The most prominent species is G. gnemon, grown and used to some extent in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In Java, the nuts are abundantly sold either fresh or preboiled. A favoured seedcake is also sold having had their outer coats of the seeds removed, then roasted and pounded into molds and dried. These cakes known as emping, are fried in coconut oil and eaten.
