Sausage tree fruit

Sausage tree fruit

(Kigelia pinnata — Family Bignoniaceae)

This highly unusual fruit comes from an African tree having a fifty-foot spread.

It also grows in Florida and other warm areas for its curious fruits.

The fruits look like sausages that grow in clusters, with each being about eighteen inches long and four inches in diameter. The flesh and seeds are edible, but the seeds are usually roasted first.

The orange-red flowers often have an unpleasant fragrance.
