Davidson’s plum, ooray
(Davidsonia pruriens and D. pruriens var. pruriens — Family Davidsoniaceae)
Ooray is the fruit of two small trees found in the rainforests of Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia, and is considered one of the best fruits found there.
The trees of the north are usually much larger than those of the south (var jerseyana).
The blue-black plum-like fruits have some loose hairs on the surface and some small flattened seeds with fibrous coats. The purple flesh is soft and juicy, although somewhat acidic, making it an excellent candidate for jams and preserves.
Named after J.E. Davidson, its Latin name means “an itching sensation”, which, probably refers to the hairy surface of the leaves and stems.
