Third and Fourth Books of Maccabees

Translator:   Moses Hadas
Editor:   Moses Hadas
Publisher:   Ktav Publishing House, 1953

III Maccabees exposes the evil of race hatred and its preordained doom. In IV Maccabees, the spirit of the man of faith is portrayed in triumph over tyrants and their death-wielding instruments. While the two books are not consciously interrelated, they are mutually complementary in voicing a truth to which Jewish history is the eternal witness.

Both the Greek and the English texts are presented, being on facing pages. The probable date of the writing of III Maccabees is B.C.E. 25 or 24. For IV Maccabees, the date is between B.C.E. 5 and C.E. 70, probably about C.E. 37.
