Hemp Soap

Molds (muffin tins, special soap molds, or any small glass or metal container)
  • 1 lb. (500 g) melt-and-pour clear soap base (for example, that from SoapScope -- Canadian-based, but will send to the US)
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) hemp oil (strain the oil so it is clear of residue)
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) colour, fragrance, or essential oils, if desired (green tea and lemongrass complement hemp oil)
    1. Microwave soap base in a glass container, being careful not to allow the soap base to boil. Alternately, melt the soap base in a double boiler or in a bowl over a pot of simmering water. Be sure to keep a lid on the bowl that is holding your soap as this will keep the moisture from evaporating from the soap base.
    2. When the soap melts, add the hemp oil slowly, stirring gently to avoid creating bubbles. Add fragrance, colour, or essential oils at this point and stir gently to combine.
    3. Pour the soap slowly into the molds. Any bubbles may be removed with a spritz of rubbing alcohol.
    4. Allow the soap to cool and harden for a couple of hours undisturbed (depending on the size of the molds). If you must speed up the drying time, place the soap into the freezer, being careful that it does not freeze. When the soap has set, remove the bars from the molds. Because the soap is high in emollient vegetable glycerin, be sure to wrap finished soaps with plastic wrap to keep them from drying out.

Hemp Seed Tofu

Richard Rose, author of The HempNut Cookbook, was able to obtain an exclusive account of how hemp seed tofu is made. This came from Robert C. Clarke, who had a session with Chinese makers (Miao/Hmong) in March of 2000. Follow these steps.
  1. Hemp seed is thoroughly washed with clean water before making the curd. The wet hemp seed is then ladled one scoop at a time into the mouth at the top of a stone mill.
  2. The coarsely ground, wet hemp seed mash squeezes out from the side of the mill as it is ground. The seeds are milled only once.
  3. When enough hemp seed has been ground for one meal, the seed mash is scraped into a bucket at the end of a hollowed tree trunk. The mill is then rinsed with fresh water. All of the seed mash and rinse water is collected together in the bucket. The pieces of seed shell sink to the bottom of the milky hemp seed and water suspension.
  4. The seed mash and water mixture is poured into a rice sack and squeezed to collect the hemp seed milk in the bucket. The remaining hemp seed cake is used to feed cattle.
  5. As the hemp milk simmers at a low boil and before it begins to curdle, fennel greens are added to the mixture. The fennel greens taste good and hold the soft curd together. They also aid in digestion. About half an hour later, the curds and fennel greens have floated to the top and then taken to the table to be eaten.
  6. The vegan, creamy hemp seed curd is very tasty. If congealed more and drained, it would be a similar product to soybean tofu.

Pam’s Hemp Protein Dessert

Use any amount and any combination of the following:
  • Dates
  • Nuts (Brazils, walnuts, almonds, or other)
  • Seeds (pumpkin, sesame, sunflower, hemp seed, or other
  • Hemp protein powder (approximately 2 cups of protein poweder to 6 cups of dates before they are soaked and before the nuts and seeds are added)
    1. Take whole or chopped raw dates, coarsely chopped nuts and seeds and mix together in a large bowl that has a cover.
    2. Barely cover with filtered room temperature water.
    3. Cover and let stand overnight unrefrigerated.
    4. In the morning, use a potato masher to mash together. This mixture will be quite moist but should not be soupy.
    5. Add enough protein powder to make a stiff “batter”.
    6. Place into a container with a cover and refrigerate.
    7. Freeze any extra. Use spoonfuls as a dessert or role into balls and dip into ground nuts for a more appealing dessert or appetizer.
    8. Partially freezing a layer of this mixture and then cutting into squares also makes a delicious frozen dessert.
